Wendy: TV Legend and Litter Campaigner

27 February 2009

It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of actress Wendy Richard following her courageous battle against cancer.

In addition to her hugely successful show business career, Wendy also gave generously of her time in support of Keep Britain Tidy on a number of occasions.

In the early 1990s, for example, she was an enthusiastic supporter of our "Getting a Grip on Litter" campaign.

In the picture above, Wendy is seen with former Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Graham Ashworth at one of our events.

While her most famous acting role was as the formidable Pauline Fowler in EastEnders, she will also be fondly remembered for playing glamorous Miss Brahms in the sitcom Are You Being Served? along with many other television and film appearances.

"Wendy has been a much loved figure on British television for decades," said Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Phil Barton.

"The campaigning she carried out for us at the height of her fame showed that she, in turn, loved her country and was committed to using her high profile to improve the quality of its environment.

"We send our sincere condolences to Wendy's family and friends."
